Ref : Residential Theft – Condo Units

Numerous thefts and attempts have occurred at Cours du Canal Lachine, Cours Charlevoix, blut also at the Bief des Seigneurs, the Condo Saint-Rémi, etc.

First type scenario :

1) The thief (generally well dressed) picks the lock ;

2) The thief fills the exterior lock with toothpicks ;

3) The thief enters the condo and locks the door ;

4) If, by inadvertence & while the thief is inside, the resident tries to open the door (which can not be done because of the lock being filled with tooth picks), the residents goes to a neighbour to call the locksmith – this allows time for the thief to escape – without being noticed ;

5) If not, valuable possessions such as jewellery, Eskimo soapstone statues, money, foreign currency, credit cards, passports are taken ;

6) Please note that everything is done cleanly and usually there are no visible traces left.

Second type scenario :

1) The thief (generally a young sportive person) use a crow bar to open the condo entrance door ;

2) The thief gets in and takes jewels, money, etc, ;

3) The thief uses a sporting Nautilus type bag to hide the stolen objects and get out.

We believe that the thieves plan in advance their retrieval. They either claim to be Canada post employees delivering to a neighbour which is not the case. In case of doubt, do not open the door.

We strongly recommend in that order,

1) that you change all locks that can be picked (ALMET, etc) by lock that are less prone to picking, such as MEDECO, ABLOY, Mul-T-Lock, and,

2), ideally, to have an alarm system.
